Engagement Gift Ideas and Delivery in India

Who this is for, and when to order
This page is for you if you have been invited to a ring ceremony or engagement and want to give something chosen, not grabbed. Order at least 10 days before the ceremony, so there is time to choose from five options and for the gift to be wrapped and delivered.
Who gives what
These are typical ranges, not rules. They vary by family and city.
- Family ₹5,000 to ₹15,000. Suits a lasting gift for the couple\'s future home. Avoid anything that will be repeated at the wedding.
- Close friend ₹2,000 to ₹5,000. Suits something personal to the couple, such as a framed print or a premium hamper. Avoid cash unless the family expects it.
- Colleague ₹500 to ₹1,500. Suits a small, tasteful gift or a shared team gift. Avoid anything too personal.
How it differs from a wedding gift
An engagement marks the commitment; the wedding marks the union. Gifts at the engagement are therefore smaller and are not usually given as shagun. Many guests give a modest gift now and a larger one, or shagun, at the wedding. Keep the two distinct: a personal gift at the engagement and shagun or a home gift at the wedding. For the larger occasion, see wedding gifts in India.
For the couple, or for the parents
Address the gift to the couple. If you know the families well, a separate small gift or sweets box for the couple\'s parents is a thoughtful addition and is often noticed. If you only know one side, keep the gift to the couple and add a note that names both of them.
Timing around the ring ceremony
The gift should arrive before or on the day of the ceremony, not after. If the date is fixed at short notice, order as soon as you know. Choose the delivery location: the family\'s address, or your own if you would like to hand it over at the ceremony.
What to avoid
- A large hamper that duplicates what you plan to send for the wedding.
- Gifts for the couple\'s home before they have decided where they will live.
- Anything without a note. A short note is what makes the gift yours.
